Introduction

Japan is a country that loves to mingle the very modern with the traditional side by side.One traditional element is wearing Yukata to a variety of events.At an Onsen, after enjoying a bath, Japanese people dress in Yukata to cool down before bed.There are many kinds of Yukata as there are many occasions to which they are worn.Also unlike western dress, there are specific directions to wearing Yukata.In this lesson you will learn about how to properly wear Yukata depending upon your gender.You will borrow the class Yukata and record an instructional video on how to wear Yukata. You are going to be a guide to a sister school group of foreigners who are visiting the ryoukan who all speak Japanese. Your instructional video should help them wear Yukata.

Task

You will research general information about Yukata and answer the questions above on a Japanese worksheet.Using the Yukata vocabulary worksheet, use all terms and create a video explanation and presentation on how to wear Yukata.Once you have created your video, post it on your wiki site with research facts. Lastly post a reflection and post five comments on other groups videos.

Introduction:

Research (Pre-activity)
Go to this youtube link and watch the following commercial on Yukata.

Answer the following questions on your wiki page.

  • What were the girls wearing in the commercial?
  • What kind of event were they going to?
  • What kind of people wear this?


1.) From the following site, select three facts that you think are most useful for your explanation video. ( http://www.japaneselifestyle.com.au/fashion/yukata_kimono.html )

2.) From the “How to:” sidebar, go through all the pages and after reviewing all, write down the obi pattern you will try.(Even if you are a boy, select one that you will demonstrate on a female Yukata wearer in your video.) (

3.) Select three other pages under `kimono` and create a compare contrast chart that you will explain in the video presntation. (

4.) Under "Kimono accessories" read all articles and select three facts t hat you would like to share from each. (

5.) Under "Kimono articles" select three just from their titles and read the articles. Create a one paragraph summary in English to present at the end of your instructional video. (

6.) Check the video on folding Yukata after you are done with it.


Group Activity
1.) In a group of three, use the class Yukata and try to put the Yukata on one person with help from the teacher if necessary. Use the weblinks above to aid in your efforts. You may use your vocabulary sheet but you can only use Japanese to communicate.
2.) In your group, divide everyone into roles and practice putting on Yukata. Follow the following directions.

1.Prepare flip camera and make sure it is functional (batteries, etc.).

2.Select filming location and make sure lighting and background are appropriate. Oversee rehearsals。

3. Help create script and add three facts from rearch for last portion of video. No sound will go on the video.

4. Film the video making sure that all necessary shots are saved for the presentation.

5. Edit the video and with other members practice with script a presentation for the class. Divide the presenation into three portions. You will only be presenting one part but the teacher will decide which portion you will present.  Practice all three!!!

6. Prior to presentation, individually record audio to go along with the video and post to wiki along with your interesting facts you found earlier.

7. Present for the class. After the video is over individually share your interesting facts.

8. Post a one paragraph (English) reflection after your project is done.

9.Post comments on three other groups reflections after all presentations are done.

4. Prepare the model and materials for the video and if the model and materials for the video and if any problems arise, fix them for the final product.

5. Edit the video and with other members practice with script a presentation for the class. Divide the presenation into three portions. You will only be presenting one part but the teacher will decide which portion you will present.  Practice all three!!!

6. Prior to presentation, individually record audio to go along with the video and post to wiki along with your interesting facts you found earlier.

4.You will post your video, individual commentary, individual research facts, one paragraph summary, reflection and five comments on your wiki.


5. Prepare for a presentation to ‘share’ the video and directions on how to put on yukata. Other students write down three strengths and three weaknesses of the presentations.

Students will have a half sheet copy of the rubric that they will fill out along with the strengths/weaknesses.


Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.
